Post Op Recovery – Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Plastic surgery often disrupts the lymphatic system, especially if liposuction has been performed. Plus “swelling” is our body’s healing effort after surgery. Manual lymphatic drainage supports the movement of the lymphatic fluid. The swelling, “edema”, and bloated (heavy) feeling comes from excess lymph fluid buildup. Through gentle movements, the lymphatic sessions move this fluid to promote faster healing and support reducing the risk of fibrosis (a thickening of tissue). Accommodations are made for the session to make it as comfortable as possible: extra pillows and bolters offer extra comfort.

As healing progresses, scar tissue release techniques can be used to reduce excess scarring. Someone who has had augmentation, ex-plant with liposuction, abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), liposuction, a BBL (Brazilian Butt Lift), mommy makeover, facelift, or any type of liposuction with a tissue transfer, will benefit from a manual lymphatic drainage session. It is highly recommended to schedule these sessions as soon as the plastic surgery procedure is scheduled to ensure availability when you need it.

Therapeutic Massage

In each therapeutic massage I draw from a variety of techniques. I may use light to deeper pressure, warm towels, hot packs, techniques rooted in eastern modalities such as shiatsu and acupressure, or stretches designed to address the mind-body connection. My goal is to provide a results-based massage session for you: to relax or to rehabilitate or both!

Manual Lymphatic Drainage Session

Manual lymphatic drainage massage therapy has many applications. Since it is the body’s “filter” it is used to support our immune system. Sometimes it is recommended to support a new training regimen or a wellness cleanse or a dietary change. Often after a joint replacement, swelling is a big hurdle. During physical therapy, a lymphatic session may be recommended to support achieving the range of motion goals required post orthopedic surgery. During oncology treatments, the lymphatic system may be compromised, and a customized lymphatic massage can support healing and recovery. For those managing lymphedema, lymphatic massage is part of regular maintenance to reduce discomfort and reduce the risk of developing cellulitis. And sometimes, an MLD session is just plain relaxing!
